Hope you all had a great, short week after the 4th! We are really leaning into summer this week and are obsessed with summery manicures, hats, and food. See everything we’re obsessed with in this week’s And Then We Tried obsessions.

Essentially plain t-shirts with a little something extra

I got this Philosophy shirt during my dad’s birthday shopping extravaganza and I can’t stop wearing it. Note: the birthday shopping extravaganza is a tradition my family has where my dad takes my sisters and I out shopping for his birthday. It’s pretty great. Back to the shirt, it is pretty much a plain t-shirt, but it has a little half peplum on the sides. I’d describe this style as “plain but a little extra.”

Vegetarian Meats

Field Roast Sausages

Summer means eating as much grilled food as possible, right? Well, this vegetarian was getting hot dog envy. Totally a thing. There are tons of veggie burgers out there, but in the past, I’ve had the hardest time finding veggie hot dogs. A few months ago, I found Field Roast at the Earth Fare in Westgate and I bought their Italian Sausage and it is SO GOOD. Cut to this week and I’m at the Heinen’s in Rocky River and they expanded their vegetarian meats section and now they have tons of Field Roast (and Tofurky and other brands) products. I bought the Kielbasa (POLISH 4 LYFE), Italian Sausage, Mexican Chipotle Sausage, and their Smoked Tomato Deli Slices. I had the kielbasa on the 4th and it was great but I haven’t tried the deli slices yet. They have a ton of fake meat options, including meatloaf, so head to Heinen’s or Earth Fare to check it out. Do you have any other vegetarian meat recommendations for me? Let me know in the comments. I’ll try anything!

Ikebana Vase

ikebana vase and then we tried

My boyfriend’s mom sent me this Ikebana vase as a little early birthday present. Ikebana is an ancient Japanese flower arranging technique with disciplined rules of placement and form. Now, mine is pretty sad compared to some of the incredible pieces done by people who study Ikebana but for my first attempt, I was pretty happy. Check out some of the crazy amazing things they can do with just a few flowers.

Summery manicure

Summer manicure and then we tried

I went full summertime mani this week as a fun treat to myself. Hang Nguyen at Olive & June in Pasadena is AMAZING. Check out her Instagram for a bunch of nail art inspiration and if you’re in the area definitely squeeze in a quick mani with Hang!

Stranglers

Since I’m up to date on My Favorite Murder, I’ve been looking for other podcasts to pass the time before new MFM episodes are uploaded on Thursdays. Recently I’ve gotten into Stranglers, an investigation into the Boston strangling murders in the 1960s. It’s so, so well done and thoroughly researched. One of my favorite parts, though, is that F. LEE BAILEY (HELLO!) participates in a few of the episodes! Definitely worth checking out if you’re interested in true crime, although I will warn you that the descriptions of the crimes are quite graphic.

Baseball Hatspink made in the land legend headwear

I’ve been trying to wear hats as much as possible when I’m outside so as to protect my delicate face skin, and I’ve amassed quite the collection of baseball hats so far! My current favorite is this Pincord Made in the Land hat that I got from Legend Headwear at the Cleveland Flea last month. They’ll be at the Flea tomorrow too if you’re in Cleveland and want to check them out!

Attaching a wood fence to a chainlink fence

As I mentioned in my last fence/gate update post, I helped Erika attach a wood fence to the chainlink fence in her backyard. The process was similar to when I converted a chainlink fence to a wood fence, except in this case, we left the chainlink fence intact. This method is a good option if you want to add a little more privacy to your yard or camouflage a chainlink fence while you wait to save up for a completely new fence.

Obsessions: 10.19.18

You wanna know what we have been decidedly NOT obsessed with in the past month? The blog. Womp womp. We’re hopping back in this week, but we’ll be posting a bit more sporadically for a while. Here’s hoping you all loved getting caught up on Michelle’s driveway gate plans yesterday. See what else we’ve been obsessed with in this week’s And Then We Tried Obsessions.

Fence Updates and Two-Panel Wood Driveway Gate Plans

Hellooooo, I’m thinking about fences again! You all had the pleasure of following along as I moved and rebuilt the fence in my backyard and then converted a chainlink fence into a wood fence along my driveway, and now it’s finally time to build that driveway gate. Of course, I can’t just build a driveway gate and leave it at that, I’ve also decided to cap the entire fence to cover up the dogear pickets and give everything a cleaner and more finished look. HOORAY!
